Moses Matovu a Giant of Ugandan Music Remembered.

Uganda’s music industry is mourning the death of veteran musician and Afrigo Band leader Moses Matovu, who died on Thursday, September 24, 2026, at the age of 77. Matovu succumbed to injuries sustained during an attack in Kibuli, Kampala. Police have opened a suspected murder investigation, with the circumstances surrounding his death still being investigated.

Born on June 19, 1949, Matovu began his professional music career in the 1960s and later became one of the founding members of Afrigo Band, established in 1975. As a saxophonist, vocalist, composer and bandleader, he guided the group for decades and helped make it one of Uganda’s longest-running and most influential live bands.

Matovu’s contribution to Ugandan music stretched across nearly six decades. He mentored generations of musicians and remained an important figure in the country’s live-band tradition. His death marks the end of an extraordinary musical journey and leaves a lasting legacy through Afrigo Band and the many lives he touched through music.

Moses Matovu will be remembered as one of the enduring voices and instrumentalists of Uganda’s musical history.
